Quick checks for any printer
- Print the printer's own test or status page from its buttons or menu. If that is blank too, the problem is in the printer. If it prints, look at the computer, driver or document.
- Check the ink or toner level on the display or software.
- If the cartridge is new, check for orange tape, a pull-tab or a sealing strip still in place.
- Make sure the right printer is selected, not a PDF or old driver.
- Restart the printer and computer.
Inkjet and ink tank printers
- Run a nozzle check. Gaps or a blank pattern mean clogged nozzles.
- Run one head cleaning, wait, and check again. Repeated cleanings waste ink; if two or three do not help, stop.
- On ink tank models, check that the tanks are filled above the minimum line and the valve or transport lock is open.
- Air in the ink lines after a tank ran dry may need an ink charge or flush from the maintenance menu.
- Printers left unused for weeks are the usual cause. Print a page a week to prevent it.
Laser printers and photocopiers
- Remove and reseat the toner cartridge and drum, checking the sealing strip is out.
- Gently rock a toner cartridge side to side to spread the toner.
- If prints are completely blank with a full, genuine cartridge, the drum, transfer roller or high-voltage supply may have failed. That needs a technician.
- On a photocopier: if prints work but copies are blank, the original may be face-down the wrong way, or the scanner lamp may have failed.
