Types of document feeder
| Feeder | What it does | Speed for two-sided originals |
|---|---|---|
| ADF | Feeds originals one by one; scans one side | Not applicable, one-sided only |
| RADF (reversing) | Scans one side, flips the page, scans the other | Slower, each page passes twice |
| DADF / single-pass | Two scan heads read both sides in one pass | Fastest |
Examples from our range: the Konica Minolta bizhub 306i has a 130-sheet RADF; the Epson EcoTank L15180 and M15180 offer double-pass auto duplex scanning; the Canon imageCLASS MF244dw has a 35-sheet ADF; the Epson EcoTank M200 has a 30-page ADF.
Duplex printing
A duplex unit turns the sheet over inside the machine and prints the second side. It is standard on many office machines and optional on others. The Kyocera TASKalfa 2020 and 2320, for example, take an optional DU-480 duplex unit. Setting duplex as the default is one of the simplest ways to reduce printing costs.
Do you need them?
- Copying or scanning files, contracts or answer sheets of more than a few pages: yes, an ADF.
- Scanning two-sided originals often: a DADF saves real time.
- Printing long reports or handouts: duplex printing.
- Printing the odd single page at home: neither is essential.
