How it works

What is a multifunction printer (MFP)?

A multifunction printer (MFP), also called an all-in-one or multifunction device (MFD), combines a printer, copier and scanner in one machine, and sometimes a fax. It ranges from a home ink tank all-in-one to an A3 office photocopier. Its benefit is one machine, one set of consumables and one point of service instead of three or four.

Benefits of a multifunction printer for an office

  • Space: one footprint instead of a printer, copier and scanner.
  • Cost: one set of consumables and one service contact.
  • Workflow: scan a signed document straight to email or a shared folder.
  • Control: office MFDs can track use by user or department. The Konica Minolta bizhub 225i in our range supports accounting for up to 50 user accounts.

If the MFP breaks, you lose printing, copying and scanning together, so office MFDs are usually bought with a service arrangement. See photocopier maintenance in Kochi.

What is the difference between an MFP and an MFD?

None in practice. MFP (multifunction printer) and MFD (multifunction device) both mean a machine that prints, copies and scans. MFD is more often used for larger office copiers.

What does 4-in-1 mean on a printer?

Print, copy, scan and fax. A 3-in-1 drops the fax.
